P2 Experts Background

Breaking Through Pollution Prevention Barriers

By adjusting the production process to reduce the generation of waste at the source, pollution prevention (P2) programs help companies avoid pollution control costs, reduce environmental liability and improve production efficiency. Although P2 opportunities can be found in businesses of all sizes, most companies--especially smaller firms--lack the in-house expertise to implement source reduction projects. P2 Experts is designed to help companies overcome these informational barriers by creating an easy way to locate the individuals who can identify and pursue source reduction opportunities.

Adding to the Arsenal

By concentrating on P2 professionals in the private sector, P2 Experts adds to a growing number of P2 informational resources such as National Pollution Prevention Roundtable's Pollution Prevention Yellow Pages and EPA's Pollution Prevention Directory. The combination of these searchable web sites provides a wide range of valuable P2 information for companies, state agencies, researchers and educators.

P2 Experts Development and Sponsorship

The Northeast Waste Management Officials' Association (NEWMOA) managed the development of P2 Experts. The project was sponsored by the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable under a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

NEWMOA

The Northeast Waste Management Officials' Association (NEWMOA) is a nonprofit interstate association whose membership includes the pollution prevention, hazardous and solid waste, and waste site cleanup program directors from state environmental agencies in New England, New Jersey and New York. NEWMOA was established by the governors of the New England states as an official interstate regional organization and was formally recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 1986. NEWMOA provides support services to its eight member states to enhance state capabilities, facilitate program and policy development, and foster communications. NEWMOA helps states articulate and promote regional positions and strategies for environmentally sound and effective waste management and pollution prevention programs. To find out more about NEWMOA contact their main office at (617) 367-8558.
